weight gain and carpal tunnel syndrome
I am suffering from most likely carpal tunnel syndrome according to my internist. i heard a very quick statement on the news last night about sudden weight gain and carpal tunnel syndrome in pregnant women. i am wondering if this may be true for the general population. i have gained a significant amount of weight in the last 8 months (not pregnant) and the amount of pain in my wrists has been growing worse during approx. the same time frame.
Thank you

Hi Jackiessister,
Welcome to the forum. I haven't read any medical evidence where CTS would cause weight gain. CT is associated with pregnancy and menopause because of hormone changes that cause fluid retentiion and tissue swelling.
I hope you are being treated for this condition.

Oops, I didn't mean that the CT was causing the weight gain...actually, the reverse...weight gain aggravating the CT. I failed to mention that i have been in the midst of menopause and at this point would be considered postm. Also dealing with joint and tissue swelling from urticaria vasculitis. Perhaps the swelling, menopausal hormone changes, weight are all contributing to the onset of CT??? It is just bloody painful and interfereing with life!Oh ok, there is help for CT, the surgery for this is well practiced now and with good outcomes. Are you sleeping with splints or such. Also ask your dr about the excercises or physical therapy for this condition for a try prior to any surgery. Yes it is painful I agree. Good Luck
Purple98LadyWeight gain has been reported to increase carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms, along with the other risk factors already mentioned in this thread. One possible plan for you would be to reduce weight, which will also be beneficial to your health and well-being in many, many ways, and see if the carpal tunnel syndrome is resolved. Of course, that is not necessarily the reason in your case, so other treatments should also be initiated if the diagnosis is made.
