sudden onset strabismus in adult female

My friends mom, 45-50 years of age, suffers from chronic headaches. Recently she was driving home and experienced blurred vision. When she got home the blurred vision continued and when examined had sudden onset of strabismus (cross eyed). A CAT scan revealled nothing and she is booked for an MRI in January. However, reading more about her symptoms I believe it may be ION (Ischemic Optic Neuropathy) and fear it will only get worse over time. She has had no head trauma and no history of illness. She does have a thyroid condition. Is it just a matter of a swollen/inflammed optic nerve which she could corrct with steroids or is it more serious? She continues to have blurred vision, cross eyed and severe headaches. Please let me know what it might be and if my diagnosis is correct. If anyone can help please let me know. Thank you.
