Spreading nerve damage

In 1999 my husband was diagnosed with winging of the scapula. Caused by the nerves in that area no longer controling the muscle which holds the scapula in place. The orthopedic removed some lymphnodes that were clustered around the nerve in his neck. This did not help. The only thing he could suggest was wiring his shoulder blade to his rib cage. But that is not good either. In 2001 he was lifting something at work, and felt some pain further down, sure enogh there was more nerve damage. They put him on permanent light duty, lifting no more than 10 lbs. Now for the past couple weeks, his other shoulder is huting him and it has started to look like the bad shoulder with the winging of the scapula. Is there a disease or anything that can cause something like this that we could have our orthopedic and neurologist check for?
Thank you.
