Sleep apnea and weight loss

Does sleep apnea cause weight gain and hinder weight loss? If so how would you find out if sleep apnea is the cause of your weight gain?

Answers:

Hi,

Sleep apnea can be caused by weight gain:

http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/...ea_Causes.htmlI am 17 years old and I have got 30 pounds last year without gaining any height. Now I am 150 pounds and would like to loose at least the 30 pounds. Please help me. I tried all the summer no junk food swimming and walked a mile a day and had buttered toast 4 breakfasts, and had a smoothie for lunch and for tea a 400 calorie meal. How long would it take to loose that target?
If there is other way to loose fast please let me know.Sleep apnea can make it difficult for you to lose weight. It helps to manage what you are eating, by eating healthy and not starving yourself and to exercise. It is possible to lose the weight if you have apnea causing the problem, even though it might be a little bit harder to do. My brother is in a college military based exercise program and has lost over 40 lbs recently (with severe sleep apnea, quits breathing over 700 times a night). When you can't push yourself anymore, they make you anyways. The point is, you might need to walk that extra mile, but it would be worth it in the long run. Obesity makes sleep apnea worse. Not to mention the blood pressure problems it can cause. Losing the weight won't make the apnea disappear but it can make it better, and puts you at less risk for heart problems. I hope you are being treated for this. It won't make the weight problem go away but through other measures, you can control it.The medication can be causing the weight gain but if they are working dont change them. but it sounds like he may need to go to a psychiatrist just because they are better trained to manage those types of medications. And might be able to safely switch him to just one or two that work just as well.

weight gain is also common with patients who have untreated apnea. if that is the cause after he gets his c-pap it should start to resolve. It is tough to lose weight when you are not getting enough sleep, because our metabolisms are faster when we sleep and that's when most weight loss occurs, so if you have sleep apnea it can definitely slow or ruin your efforts to lose weight. You may need to put some extra work in and follow a very strict diet, but it still can be done.
