numbness in thigh

I had my first experience many years ago whilst pregnant. Numbness pain, like burning in the front and side of R thigh. It stops above the knee. It did not clear completly after delivery. also had lots of episodes of mechanical back pain, culminating in emergency microdiscectomy for cauda equina in 1999. All back & leg symptoms then eased. 18 months ago the leg numbness returned. No back pain, but there is some discomfort in R hip.( no actual hip degeneration- had that checked) Symptoms are worse on standing or slow walking (supermarket shopping etc) Fine when walking briskly. Eases when I rest flat. I was never advised that the thigh numbness was not atributed to the back problem- incidenatally this was a ruptured disc between L5-S1. Now, I'm wondering if it could be meralgia parasthetica. My chiropractor thinks probably not as I'm not obese or diabetic, but maniplation hasnt helped.
Could it be this? Is there any treatment? if not this, what else could it be.

Katykat,

It certainly sounds like meralgia paresthetica. I am not a doctor but I would maybe consult with a neurologist. He may want to do a nerve conduction study to confirm that diagnosis. I was diagnosed with that several months ago and I am on Neurontin for other neuralgia symptoms and it has definitely lessened my pain in my right thigh. Again I am no doctor, I am an RN, but I think the best advice is to follow-up with a neurologist. Good luck.
