neck pain radiating down right arm

I am yet another newbie and I have a question... or possibly several related questions. Over the past few days I have developed worse than normal muscle pain and tension on the right side of the neck (feels like sternocleidomastoid and trapezius), and a new addition of tingly pain all the way down my arm, inside upper arm, outside lower arm and into the ring and pinky fingers. I have chronic back pain and doing a mild stretch to relieve the shoulder/chest/neck tension (arms behind back, expanding across chest, tucking chin, straightening cervical spine) caused me to black out very briefly (hit the floor).

Background: I am female, 28, and have idiopathic scoliosis dx'ed at 16, lumbar curve goes to the right, thoracic to the left, both curves below 30 degrees, was not treated with a brace. Coincidental to the scoliosis developing (about age 13) is chronic muscular back pain, my muscles constantly feel tense and hard. This I treat with stretching, yoga, occasional advil/aspirin, heating pads, and otherwise sucking it up. The right side muscular neck pain dates to the past 5 years or so... it feels like there's a rock in there. I had an acute rt neck spasm about 18 months ago, same muscle or muscles. The radiating pain is new though. yow.

Hi, thanks for your question. Neck pain radiation to upper extremity and tingling in fingers could be caused by compression of nerve roots in the cervical spine, due to e.g. disc herniation. Therefore, if the symptom persists for more than a few weeks, you should be seen and physically examined, sometimes an MRI is needed. However, especially when the tingling is in the 4th and 5th fingers, as it seems to be in your case, such symptoms can often be due to just neck muscle tension and related problems, so it is definitely not necessarily a disc herniation.
