Neck pain

Dr. Joshua,
I've been having neck pain for approximately 7 months. The pain is clearly on the left, left/back side of neck with no pain on right side. My PA stated it is caused by the tightness of the muscle that runs from the back of the neck down to the front of the shoulder. He has had me on motrin and flexeril, and for the past 6 weeks, physical therapy. I have experienced some relief, though nothing to date has provided lasting relief.
Just last week, he ordered the first xray. My cervical spine is straight as a board when viewed from the side. The PA believes his original diagnosis is correct, and that we'll continue to treat the muscles in my neck & shoulder.
I don't mean to be skeptical, but after months of meds and weeks of therapy, I don't feel confident that I'll be pain-free any time soon. Please help me.
My questions: 1. What causes the cervical spine to lose its natural curve and become straight? 2. What can correct it? 3. What tests, if any, would be necessary to ensure we are treating the problem and not just the symptom?
Thank you for whatever help you can provide me.
