My fairly-young husband's strokes & TIAs
My husband had his first stroke in May 2005 at the age of 45. He is 6'2" and weighs 185 lbs, non-smoker, low cholesterol, works out 4 to 5x a week. Two weeks later, what they called a TIA occurred with deficits lasting for 3 days. (Both of these episodes required hospitalization.) He has experienced many TIAs since - most occurring in the middle of the night - him waking up with numbness in his left arm. He had another stroke in October 2006 - more severe - affecting both sides of his body and his speech (paraphasia) and memory (he can't remember a sequence of events longer than 3 items). He has fully regained his physical movements. In the last 2 months, he has experienced approximately 10 TIA events, lasting anywhere from minutes to 4 hours long. He has experienced migraine headaches associated with visual auras since his teens.
Each imaging test performed (after the strokes) finds no clot in the brain (although bleeding and damaged areas were observed.) His heart is perfect. The specialist we have seen says my husband is of the 1% of patients where the strokes are NOT caused by a clot, but rather CONSTRICTING of the blood vessels in the brain. He is on Verapamil, Depakote and aspirin.
Does anyone know what may be the underlying cause of the constriction? Can that be determined? Does the medication regimen seem appropriate? Where can I find more information on this???

Hi JG
Welcome to the forum!
I'm not a Dr. so I can't tell you exactly why your husband has this constriction. But here is some reading material regarding constriction regarding plaques etc. which can decrease flow.
