Medication making me fat?
Is it possible for Zoloft to cause weight gain or cause someone to eat more often and not think much about it? I have been on Zoloft for over a year and I have gained 55 lbs.

Changes in appetite and weight are listed as possible side effects of taking Zoloft. Changes in weight and appetite are also symptoms of depression, so its difficult to tell if the drug is causing it, or the underlying condition. You should discuss your concerns with your physican. Perhaps there is another medication out there that is a better match for you, or you can discuss possible strategies to keep your weight in control. Although, I currently cannot take my medications (since I'm pregnant), the medications I was taking for bi-polar disorder made me gain weight big time. Unfortunately, loosing weight is about 10 times harder than actually gaining the weight. I gain about 20 pounds within 3 months after starting my medication. It took me another year and a half to get back down those 20 pounds I gained. I'm afraid of what it’s going to be like after the baby when I go back on the meds and have to fight the weight, but I know creating little healthy habits here and there goes a long way.It is happening now to a member of my family. The medication is for knee pain - in one year, she has bloated to the size of a sumo wrestler, never exercises and spends her time eating and drinking. So different from before the medication. I say NO to all medication. Some medication will do that. However we have what is called a brain and we have to FORCE ourselves to get off our butts and do something. One can make all kinds of excuses however when it comes down to it one has to live as he/she should.
