Ideas for pain after back surgery?
Three or four years ago, my boyfriend underwent (I think its diskectomy where they shave off part of the bulging disk?) for his lower lumbar vertebrae (2 of them). He had already tried PM treatments before and the shots and was on an assinine amount of over the counter pain meds. He'd talked to a bunch of people about their experience with this surgeon and how in 6 weeks, they were feeling remarkably better after the surgery.
That was 3-4 years ago. He's on a constant supply of Lortab but since its limited (30 every 3 months), he simply doses himself up on over the counter drugs (again). Some days, the pain's so bad, no amount of medication helps. There are days he can't hardly walk because the pain shooting down his leg is so bad. Its a noticable limp. He describes it like a knife in his back. There's this shot they can give directly into the nerve going down his leg that helps for approximately 3 months but he can only get it 3 times a year and his insurance doesn't cover it and its EXPENSIVE (5 grand + each). Some sort of steroid/antiinflammatory combination that's delivered in a huge needle.
The doctor took new MRIs and said he couldn't see anything wrong and pronounced it scarred nerve tissue and that there was nothing he could do for it. Huh? So....essentially he's a cripped 20 yr. old who will be on precription pain killers for the rest of his life that barely work? There's something seriously wrong with that and I refuse to believe it. Unfortunately, my boyfriend had to go back to school because his back wouldn't let him do the work he was doing before (electrician) and doesn't have the money or good enough insurance to do anything about it yet. He doesn't want a second opinion yet because, in my opinion and from what I've gotten him to admit, he's scared. He's terrified of a second surgery and of getting his hopes up only to be disappointed again. But it sickens me to watch him suffer like this.
He's 28 and can't run, can't ride a motorcycle (which is killing him inside) and feels like he's become a cripple. He used to run 5+ miles a day and now is lucky if he makes it 1 mile once in a while. He stretches every day and that helps. When its really bad, I can tell b/c the muscles around the surgery spot in his back are extremely tense and tender to touch. If I try to rub them to get them to relax them, he flinches just from touching them.
I hate seeing him like this and its getting worse. I think the amount of medication he's on is having an affect on the rest of his body too. He suffers from migraines and bouts of insomnia.
I know my medical description is vague but I can't remember it all and he hates talking about it. If you want more info though, I can find out. What I really need is some ideas to help him through. He's got several more years of school left and at the rate he's going, Im afraid he won't be able to walk in a few years from pain. I know a second opinion is always good but where do I find a good back doctor? Obviously, I'd want to avoid getting a reference from the doctor that DID the surgery to get an unbiased opinion. Is the second opinion going to be worth the money? How much do things like that run anyway? Can he use his old MRIs or will he need new ones? Where can I find answers to these at? Any ideas or thoughts are greatly appriciated :) (references too!)
