Hypokalemia and psychosis
My sister has had problems with psychosis with episodes every year for the past 5 years. She is always hypokalemic upon hospitalization. She is 44 years old and was initially diagnosed with schizophrenia despite her age, etc. Currently she is labeled with delusional disorder.
She is always given anti-psychotic meds which she takes briefly and then goes off. The strange thing is that she improves without the meds. One year she was in a research study and they withheld the drugs for a week. She had not been on any for over a year and she was back to normal before she even left the hospital.
My question is could the hypokalemia be responsible for the psychosis? Thanks.
L.
