Fatigue, cognitive symptoms
I apologize for how long this is, but there are so many strange things I've been experiencing, I don't want to leave too much out. I'm a female in my mid-20s, have always been healthy and active, last saw a doctor about 18 months ago for a physical and routine blood work (all normal).
Several weeks ago I woke up to a stabbing pain in my right eye, accompanied by blurriness (almost "spotty") and a dark spot in the center of vision in that eye only. The pain and dark spot mostly subsided after a few days, but I still have the spotty vision (although getting better). For several months I've also had severe fatigue that isn't helped by rest (I sleep well, but wake up exhausted, my whole body just feels tired and achy, stays that way all day). I have to drag myself out of bed each morning, every muscle in my body aching, legs so stiff I can barely walk for a few minutes. I had this last year too, lasted a few months then got better, but now it's back.
I also have tingling and burning sensations in my legs and feet, especially when I'm standing still or sitting in the same position for a while, yet often when I'm lying down either my right hand/leg/foot or both legs go totally numb. I can't take a hot shower or bath without very painful burning in my feet, feeling weak and lightheaded, and blurry vision with spotty flashing lights. I've had this on and off for several years, but never thought much of it until a friend mentioned it could be a sign of a neuro problem?! In the last year I've also had a few spells of incapacitating vertigo that have lasted anywhere from 30 min to 2 days, and also have muscle spasms in my legs (right calf mainly), and occasional uncontrollable muscle twitches (arms, legs, even my neck sometimes, worst at night).
But what has really become worrisome to me is that my speech is so difficult now. I can never think of words, every sentence I have to pause to try to think of a word! I mispronounce simple words, constantly have words on the "tip of the tongue" but can't get them out, or I say the wrong words without realising it. Several friends have also commented that I'm now monotone and have long gaps in speech yet slur words together). My memory has also been declining drastically... I start writing a sentence and by the end I forget what I was writing, or I have 2 simple tasks to do and as soon as I start the first one I can't remember what the other was! I'm constantly re-reading everything for my classes, often 3 or 4 times in a row, because I just can't seem to remember things. Between my now horrendous memory and the constant fatigue I'm truly scared that I'm going to flunk out of college this year (I've always been on the honor role, but now...)
I know I should see a doctor (and I will), but I don't want to be immediately labeled as some drug-seeking quack or as depressed (I'm not – yet anyway
) I Googled a few of my symptoms (I know, bad idea), came across mostly sites about chronic fatigue syndrome and MS (among other scary stuff). I've never noticed fevers, sore throat, joint pain or swelling, or enlarged lymph nodes, but I can't help but freak out a little at how many of my symptoms fit with MS (especially the heat sensitivity!), but I know that's not terribly likely and I'm sure there are plenty of other possibilities. I know when I do see a doctor I'll be so flustered and focused on trying to get the words out right that I'm going to forget to mention half my symptoms anyway... so I guess my questions are essentially: 1) does this really sound neuro? (ie. should I be worried?) and 2) is there anything that stands out as something I really need to make a point of telling the doc? (I'll write it down to take with me so I don't forget!) :)
Thank you!

Hi Janet, thanks for your question. It's not possible for me to say whether there is some serious illness behind your symptoms or not, but based on the information I have, I'd say you should definitely see the doctor. See your primary care physician, that's a good starting point. He/she'll do a neuro exam as well, and, given your list of symptoms, will probably refer you to a neurologist. It's time for you to stop trying to diagnose your own symptoms using the Internet and let the professionals take care of that. There is absolutely no way you can diagnose these symptoms on your own, and no web doctor (including me) can tell you what is causing your symptoms.
Although you describe some symptoms that do occur with multiple sclerosis and other neurological illnesses, these symptoms can occur with any number of other illnesses, and sometimes without any underlying illness at all, so you don't necessarily have MS or any other serious neurological illness. Your symptoms alone are not indicative of any specific disease. Your writing seems very sharp and coherent, which suggests that your cognition is working just fine.
