Depression or hyperthyroidism?

I'm a 24 year old male with symptoms of severe depression. A psychiatrist diagnosed me with dysthymia four years ago and I've since been prescribed various quantities of wellbutrin, lexapro, and fluoxetine, none of which have had any effect on my symptoms. I am currently not taking any medication, but I find that I feel the best when I consume high quantities of caffeine. I don't know if that's relevant. Anyway, Since the prescriptions had no effect I've often wondered if the diagnosis was incorrect. I've been doing some reading online and found that depression can be a symptom of hyperthyroidism. I know that it's more common in women, and older people, but I've also read that it can occur at any age and can be genetic. Both my mother and grandmother have hyperthyroidism. I also have other symptoms of hyperthyroidism including dry skin, thinning hair, sore muscles, problems concentrating, and senstivity to cold. Is it possible that the underlying cause of my depression can be hyperthyroidism? If not, is there any new depression medication that's been proven more effective than the ones I listed? Lastly, if I simply wasn't given a high enough dosage of some SSRI, is there any procedure available in which my serotonin levels can be accurately tested so that an appropriate dosage can be prescribed? What should I do here? I just want to feel good.
