complication after anterior cervical discectomy
Hello,
I had a anterior cervical discectomy 8 months ago. When I woke up I could not move my left arm and the pain was unbearable. The doctor kept me in the hospital for an additional week on a morphine drip to deal with the arm/shoulder pain. I went to see an othopedic surgeon twice a week for 7 weeks for try and figure out what the problem was in my shoulder, (my neck felt better). Finally after 7 weeks they did emergency surgery and found that I had a torn rotator cuff, bursistis and a bone spur all caused from the surgery. The doctor told me it is because he left me on my side for 3 1/2 hours. Well my shoulder felt better but it still hurts very much and I can not move it very much. The pain/burn/tingling is awful. The numbness is near the deltoid.
I have heard everything from nerve damage, spinal bruising, nerve cut to "freak occurance".
If anyone has experienced this, PLEASE let me know.

Hi lobstersmom,
I was just wondering in the twice a week visits for 7wks to a orthopedic surgeon was an MRI or other testing done? What was being done during these visits to diagnose your symptoms? When you did have emergency surgery did he repair the rotator cuff? I also am wondering if you are receiving physical therapy as a recuperative asset after this surgery? So sorry your having pain after all this but I would continue to see this dr for an explanation and follow up or treatment post -op. Ask him about physical therapy or why you are still having this pain and what can be done.
