Acute Paratanitus of the Colon...Help PLEASE!
My Aunt recently turned 51 years old. She has had back problems most of her adult life. About 6 months ago, her doctor told her she would need back surgery to put in about 6 screws in a few vertebres and 3 metal rods between them. She was put on a waiting list for this surgery. She got a call about 3 weeks ago telling her she would have the surgery in two weeks and had her come in to have a colonoscopy prior to the surgery to make sure everything would be okay for surgery. The colonoscopy came back perfect. They ran all the test prior to the surgery to make sure she wouldn't have any problems making it through the surgery. So, last Monday she went into surgery and they got an early start and said everything went perfect and she even got out of surgery early. I went to visit her two days after the surgery. She seemed fine, they were letting her husband bring her food, she was drinking fluids, they had her on morphine for the pain, she was talking normal, and laughing, even though it hurt. The only thing the doctors were worried about was her stomache looked bloated...almost like she was 6 months pregnant. They said she may have an intestenal blockage. The swelling of her stomache didnt go down at all and by the weekend she began vomiting. The doctors were saying they were having trouble figuring out what it was, but were also mentioning she might have to get a colonoscopy bag because she also wasnt having any Bowel Movements. On Sunday, she was rushed into emergency surgery and they ended up removing the left side of her colon. Immediately after the surgery the swelling went down. Shes really out of it and when the doctor asked her what year it was, she said 1969. She has a feeding tube in her nose and is only getting liquids through her IV. Today they diagnosed her with Acute Paratanitus of the Colon. They didnt really go into much detail of exactly what that means or what it is so i was hoping someone could explain it to me. Since the colonoscopy came back perfect two weeks prior to the surgery, could there have been a slip in surgery? Any information would really be appreciated. Thank You for your time and help.
