100% carotid artery blockage and fainting

Two years ago my 80 year male friend was diagnosed with a 100% carotid artery blockage. The symptom was a short fainting spell. Several doctors ruled against surgery because of his age and felt that other arteries would be able to carry suffient blood to the brain. Over the last two years my friend has functioned normally except for 5 or 6 fainting spells which seem to be occuring more frequently.
Since the doctors don't want to operate what do you think he should do?

Hi,

This is often the case with carotid artery blockages in the over 80 group because of the risks involved. There have been some studies regarding and See the link below. I can't say what he should do. For me if I were that old it would depend on my quality of life , and knowing the outcome of continued symptoms of blockage including stroke. I would try and find a Dr. willing to do a stent or enter a research group, get a second opinion . Its a very real risk but one I would consider. This is however his decision knowing all the risk and possible a chance to enhance his quality of life. He must make the decision I can only speak for myself.
