Why is my Sleep Apnea Events Sounding Like Respiratory Failure?

Is it normal to sound like your in respiratory failure when waking up from an apnea event instead of gasping? It sounds exactly like resp. failure. If it's not normal, what type of problems would cause that? I don't completely stop breathing, but my breathing decreases in my sleep w) hypoxemia, oxygen level drops down to 84% (RDI 9 x hr in non-rem sleep & 32 x hr in rem sleep). I had an x-ray about 2 yrs ago showing mild scarring on my lungs so it was nothing bad, but I've smoked for 20 yrs so I am wondering if such a problem could worsen, considering the way I breathe during an apnea event. I know people typically gasp, choke, or snort themselves awake but I don't do that.

tingling in left foot spreading up leg

I am a 44 yr old male in NS canada. for over a year I have been experienceing a constant minor tingling in the bottom of my left foot. Now it seems to be spreading up my leg and occasionally I get minor spasms or tremors on unrelated areas of my leg. I have had a neuro exam (6 months ago) that indicated nothing at the time, but was sent for a lower back, spinal MRI about a month ago. No results yet. I had a bicycle accident two years ago that broke my left elbow (surgery to correct and two pins in my elbow now). When I was a small child (4) I had a severe head injury after a 12 foot fall onto concrete (Head first!).
Trying not to think the worst about my symptoms, but it is very irritating, and is beginning to affect my ability to work (I am a chef/restaurant owner)

Hip Pain

I started having pain and stiffness in my hips about 8 months ago and I went to my GP, he sent me to get an x-ray and it came back showing nothing. He then went on to ask more about my symptoms and he said I probably have Avascular Necrosis, he then sent me to get a MRI and that came back showing nothing. I then was sent to an orthopedic surgeon and he said that I have bursitis, he injected me with cortisone and sent me to PT, since then I have had 5 injections of cortisone and 9 sessions of PT using cortisone cream. The pain has not gone away and it is getting worse, none of the treatments have worked. Is it possible that the MRI was read incorrectly and I actually do have Vascular Necrosis? Any help would be much appreciated since my OS said he doesn’t know what to do at this point.

Could This Be ALS?

History is as follows:

55 year old male in good health and weight

two weeks of arm and and hand weakness then noticed atrophy of muscles in one arm cannot open door knob or close shirt buttons on cuff and neck.

Extensive twitches in arms, shoulder and back

Stiffness and cracking in neck

went to Neurologist , took blood tests, MRI all negative

Took neuro exam and EMG. Both show muscle/spinal issues all in arms, thumb but nothing in legs or head/mouth.

Dr says not definitive ALS but 40% chance. He said usually upper and lower symptoms but cannot find any thing in verbal or legs so not sure.

We are going to have all results sent to ALS Lous Gehrig Clinic at Columbia in NYC and have appt for 1/31/08. Dr says he needs an expert to look at all this and he is not sure.

Your thoughts anyone?

Hockey Helmets

I play ice hockey, and I've been having a bit of trouble with my helmet because it puts a lot of pressure on my temples. Its usually fine for the first period or so, but by the second period my head starts to hurt and I get very nauseous. By the end of the game I'm pretty dizzy and I have trouble with my vision. Do you know what the possible mechanism might be behind this? I doubt its serious, but I do remember a concussion I got by taking a shot to temple playing football when I was younger, and I had similar symptoms. I wonder if the constant pressure could be causing a similar problem. Unfortunetly, the next size helmet the school has covers my eyes, so I'll probably have to go out and buy my own helmet.

Also, if you have any idea where I left my stick, I'd be much obliged, or else I'll have to go out and buy one of those, too.
